100% cotton is simple to shrink:

1. Wash the garment in hot water.
2. Put in the dryer on high heat.
3. Check periodically throughout the drying cycle to make sure you don't over-shrink the garment.
4. When it's the right size, change the dryer setting to low heat or air and dry the rest of the way gently.

In general, expect up to 3–4% shrinkage, which on a pair of jeans with a 32″ inseam would mean shrinking about 1″–1¼” in the length. The width is much less prone to shrinkage because there is less applied tension in that direction during fabric construction. This can vary from brand to brand and style to style.

2-5% Pre-shrunk cotton will generally only shrink 2-5%. Non pre-shrunk cotton, on the other hand, can shrink as much 20% if you're not careful. This is only true for 100% cotton, however. Cotton which has been blended with synthetic fibers or other materials might shrink more or less than pure cotton.
