Originally, Best Foods and Hellman's were two different companies that made identical mayonnaises. Then they merged into one company but they kept the two separate names and where the brand that was known was Best Foods, it still is and vice versa. Unilever owns them now though.

Hellmann's - a brand owned by Unilever, like Best Foods - is essentially the Best Foods of the eastern United States. More specifically, Best Foods and Hellmann's are brand names for the very same line of mayonnaise products.

Hellmann served on the board of General Foods for several years, and over the years, they acquired more companies and merged with others. By 1932, the same company owned Best Foods and Hellmann's. Because Hellmann's had such a devoted following, the owners decided to keep both brand names.

In the case of this product the legend has been fueled by the company itself having described their product as “some people find that Best Foods mayonnaise is slightly more tangy”, perhaps due to the addition of slightly more lemon juice although the product labels don't highlight any difference in ingredients.

When we spoke to the fast food chain about the lack of mayonnaise on their menu, they said not enough customers wanted the sauce to make it worthwhile.
