The ironic thing is that “Shazam!” dates back to the early days of comics. It was created in 1939, a year after Superman, and very much conceived as a knockoff of the Man of Steel. Then, the hero was called Captain Marvel (nickname: the Big Red Cheese) and at times, he even outsold Superman in the 1940s.

A bit more violent than I first expected, but a tight script and wonderful moments of fun. This film definitely brings fun back to the superhero genre, not brooding and not talking about the fate of the world...explicitly. A film about found family and complex decisions. Worth watching and rewatching.

Because the actual title 'Captain Marvel' was now under trademark by Marvel Comics, DC couldn't simply publish their hero's stories under his own name, so they improvised. Drawing a name from both the wizard that gave Captain Marvel his powers and the magic word he speaks to become a hero, DC began using 'Shazam!'

His creation was inspired by the success of DC Comics' Superman but in his 1940s heyday, the red-clad superhero originally known as Captain Marvel was more popular and outsold the comics starring the Man of Steel. Shazam is a pure wish fulfillment character.
