The Invention. In the little town of Werther, Germany in 1909, the confectioner Gustav Nebel created the now iconic Butter Candy recipe. He took fresh cream, real butter, refined white sugar, brown rock sugar, a pinch of salt and plenty of time to create the now globally famous Butter Candy.

Werther's Original (from the original German: Werthers Echte) is a brand of caramel candy owned by the German company August Storck KG, based in Berlin, Germany. The candy is popular in Europe and North America.

For generations, Werther's Original caramels have stood for a long lasting, full flavour taste and made with only the best ingredients including real butter and fresh cream. Werther's Original products have a wide range of varieties of caramels from Hard to Soft and No Sugar Added.

In 1903, August Storck opened his own confectionery factory in the small town of Werther, Germany. By 1909, he was already shipping sweets to neighboring towns, and his workforce had grown from three people to 12.

The main ingredient in caramel is sugar. However, depending on the recipe you use, you may have to incorporate butter, heavy cream, water, or corn syrup as additional ingredients. High-quality, real caramel is always made with three basic ingredients and those are sugar, heavy cream, and butter.

Caramel candy, or "caramels", and sometimes called "toffee" (though this also refers to other types of candy), is a soft, dense, chewy candy made by boiling a mixture of milk or cream, sugar(s), glucose, butter, and vanilla (or vanilla flavoring).

It's thought the most basic form of caramel was first made by the Arabs around 1,000 AD by mixing sugar and water to form a crystallised liquid, that they used initially in the beauty industry, (think waxing and sugaring) and later becoming a confection which they first called simply a “ball of sweet.”

These caramels contain Isomalt, a common ingredient found in most Sugar Free candies, and you will find this same laxative warning printed on most Sugar Free candy products. There is not a defined amount of candy that can be consumed before you will feel any ill effects & some consumers do not have any side effects.

Werthers has hints of that home baked flavor. Werthers satisfied the sweet tooth in all of us, and doesn't require chewing which gives our teeth and our jaws a break and fulfills the need for a little something sweet after a meal.

In order to produce delicious Werther's Original Sugar Free products we use the sugar substitute Isomalt and the artificial sweetener Acesulfame-K (ace-k). Excessive consumption may produce laxative effects.

Not only did Werther's Original become a popular reference for anyone trying to paint the picture of a typical grandparent, but people also started invoking it to convey the opposite.

Carmel and caramel are not different spellings of the same word. Caramel is the correct spelling if you're talking about food or colors. Carmel is a misspelling when used in those contexts, but it is a word that can be used as a name for people or places.
