The FDA has approved cariprazine (Vraylar; AbbVie, Gedeon Richter) as an adjunctive therapy to antidepressants for treating adult patients with major depressive disorder (MDD).

Vraylar (cariprazine) is taken by mouth once a day. Some common side effects of this medication include uncontrolled muscle movements, headache, and restlessness. Unlike other antipsychotic medications, Vraylar (cariprazine) causes minimal weight gain.

Vraylar is an antipsychotic medication, but it also has an antidepressant effect. While you take Vraylar, your doctor may monitor you closely for any signs of suicidal thoughts and behaviors.

Brand-name vs. Vraylar is only available as a brand-name drug. It doesn't come in a generic version. A generic drug is an exact copy of the active drug in a brand-name medication. Generics tend to cost less than brand-name drugs.

Cariprazine is a medication that works in the brain to treat schizophrenia and bipolar disorder. It is also known as a second-generation antipsychotic (SGA) or atypical antipsychotic. Cariprazine rebalances dopamine and serotonin to improve thinking, mood, and behavior.

Although rare, taking Vraylar can cause a serious side effect called tardive dyskinesia. It refers to uncontrolled body movements that are repetitive. Symptoms of tardive dyskinesia can include: chewing motions.

Treatment with Vraylar is expected to cost approximately $1,789 per patient per year. CDEC recommends that cariprazine not be reimbursed for the treatment of schizophrenia in adults.

VRAYLAR may cause movements that you cannot control in your face, tongue, or other body parts. Tardive dyskinesia may not go away, even if you stop taking VRAYLAR. Tardive dyskinesia may also start after you stop taking VRAYLAR.

The most common side effects of VRAYLAR include: difficulty moving or slow movements, tremors, uncontrolled body movements, restlessness and feeling like you need to move around, sleepiness, nausea, vomiting, indigestion, constipation, feeling tired, trouble sleeping, increased appetite, and dizziness.

Vraylar is an atypical antipsychotic that is effective for the treatment of schizophrenia and bipolar disorder. Vraylar is usually well-tolerated and less likely than some other antipsychotics to cause elevations in blood sugar or total cholesterol levels, sedation, or weight gain.
