Cold Brewing is a method of brewing iced coffee where our baristas combine cool water with coarse ground coffee and steep for 20 hours. Time replaces heat to extract the coffee, and the result is a cold coffee concentrate that when combined with water and ice creates a smooth cold brewed coffee.

The cold water allows for a slow, gentle extraction process that yields a rich and low-acid brew. Cold brew concentrate - as opposed to regular coffee concentrate, which is made with hot water - is the undiluted form of cold brewed coffee that is used as a base for iced coffee and beyond.

For each serving, pour 8 oz of Starbucks® Multi-Serve Cold Brew Concentrate into a glass over ice, combine with 4 oz of sparkling water and stir. If using Starbucks® Single-Serve Cold Brew Concentrate, pour 1 pod into a glass over ice, combine with 8 oz of water and stir.

The Concentrate Tastes Bitter or Sour If you find your cold brew to be a little bitter, it's likely that the concentrate was over extracted by too much time or too fine of a grind. For immersion, you can reduce the brew time or use a coarser grind. For slow drip, try a coarser grind.

Compared to hot brewed coffee, a cup of cold brew can be 60% less acidic and bitter. That happens because the acids that turn to bitter don't get extracted. And the acids that add that sharp bite to hot brewed coffee don't oxidize.

Cold Brew or Kyoto-style coffee as it is often called in Japan, was made by submerging the coffee grounds in cold water for an extended period. Over time, the technique evolved into an artistic method where single beads of water were dropped into the grounds.

A ratio of 1:8 of coffee to water will produce a nice coffee ready to drink after around 24 hours at a coarse grind. Another option is to create a much stronger cold brew (named cold brew concentrate), by using a ratio anywhere from 1 part coffee to 4 parts water, up to around 1 part coffee to 2 parts water.

Because it's considered a high-quality specialty coffee, cold brew is usually served simply, either black or with a little milk or dairy substitute and sweetener, to allow the flavor of the coffee to shine. If you're in the mood for hot coffee, you can also heat it or add hot water for a Café Americano.
