XARELTO® is a prescription medicine used to: reduce the risk of stroke and blood clots in adults who have a medical condition called atrial fibrillation that is not caused by a heart valve problem. With atrial fibrillation, part of the heart does not beat the way it should.

  • The active substance is rivaroxaban. Each tablet contains 15 mg or 20 mg of rivaroxaban.
  • The other ingredients are: Tablet core: microcrystalline cellulose, croscarmellose sodium, lactose monohydrate, hypromellose (2910), sodium laurilsulfate, magnesium stearate. See section 2 “Xarelto contains lactose and sodium”

History of Xarelto Xarelto was first approved for marketing authorization in Canada in September 2008 to prevent venous thromboembolism (VTE) in people who have undergone elective total hip replacement or total knee replacement surgery.

Xarelto is only available as a brand-name drug. It doesn't come in a generic version. A generic drug is an exact copy of the active drug in a brand-name medication. Generics tend to cost less than brand-name drugs.

Bayer jointly developed Xarelto with J&J's Janssen Pharmaceuticals unit, which sells the blood clot preventer under a licensing agreement in the United States.
