This drug may make you dizzy or drowsy or blur your vision. Alcohol or marijuana (cannabis) can make you more dizzy or drowsy. Do not drive, use machinery, or do anything that needs alertness or clear vision until you can do it safely. Avoid alcoholic beverages.

If you're having trouble sleeping because of your cough, you can take Mucinex DM (guaifenesin / dextromethorphan) about 30 minutes before bedtime, so it starts working to help you rest through the night.

You can use Mucinex throughout the day, but you typically use NyQuil at night to help you sleep and let your body recover. The ingredient doxylamine in NyQuil also causes drowsiness to help you get rest. Mucinex and NyQuil Cold & Flu are only for people 12 years and older.

Side effects are few; however, anecdotally, sleeplessness may be a problem if Mucinex is taken late in the afternoon.

Does Mucinex DM keep you awake? Mucinex DM can cause sleepiness and insomnia. Some people experience sleeplessness if they take it in the late afternoon. Try to take it 30 minutes before bedtime if you are having trouble sleeping due to excessive coughing.

How well does Mucinex work for coughing? The guaifenesin in Mucinex likely won't stop you from coughing. There's mixed evidence for using guaifenesin to relieve a cough. Plus, it doesn't loosen or thin your mucus very well, either.

Guaifenesin is safe and well-tolerated. It's quite possible that you can take it or Mucinex and have no side effects. In fact, most people do not. Still, they can cause side effects in some people.

You shouldn't take Mucinex® for more than 7 days, unless directed by a doctor. This medicine may mask symptoms of a more sever infection or disease. It's important to follow the dosing instructions on the package and not to exceed the recommended dose.
