Frozen tells the story of Princess Anna as she teams up with an iceman, his reindeer, and a snowman to find her estranged sister Elsa, whose icy powers have inadvertently trapped their kingdom in eternal winter. Frozen underwent several story treatments before being commissioned in 2011 as a screenplay by Lee.

But the second movie is all about self-love, which is just as if not more important. Elsa's goal is to learn the truth of who she is and to make her peace with it, no longer denying her magical abilities or trying to shove them down out of fear.

The second film addresses loss, grief, depression, and how to find hope and personal growth through life's uncertainties. Because this is a children's film, even kids can learn these lessons from a early age and bring these lifesaving truths into their adulthood.

Frozen 2 had much greater hype and and massive expectations than Frozen did when it was released. The film's hype, combined with the immediate nationwide release in theaters, is what made Frozen 2 beat Frozen at the box office.

Frozen 2 dives deeper into the lore of Arendelle and Elsa's powers. We get a better understanding of the world that our protagonists live in, which is something that the first movie lacked. We also get a deep dive into Elsa's powers, how and why they exist, and why they exist within her.

Perhaps the most obvious message in Frozen is that it's good to be courageous. Elsa fleeing her home to live on her own was bold; Anna following her was even more so. Having a feisty streak can be a very good thing!

The utter joy of Frozen is that it behaves like a classic fairytale but then bends all the rules. One of the key reasons why it's not just another animated Disney princess movie franchise is the strength of its writing, which carried consistently and powerfully through from the first movie to the sequel.
