In 1956, Karcher opened the first two Carl's Jr. restaurants – so named because they were a smaller version of Carl's Drive-In Barbecue restaurant – in Anaheim and Brea.

The brands' “Happy Star” icon–recognizable from the earliest days of the Carl's Jr. brand and later added at Hardee's as well–was made to look more three-dimensional and gold in color, transforming it from a cartoon character for children to a symbol of quality, literally like a gold star.

I went to both chains to eat their most famous burgers and to see why one had such a big brand advantage over the other. I found that the food wasn't the deciding factor: Carl's Jr. had a slightly better burger and much better fries, but McDonald's remains the more beloved brand.

Back in the '90s, they combined menus, but kept their names separate, because they believed that was the clearest path to growth. Right now, Hardee's and Carl's Jr remain more alike than they are different, even if they are becoming more different than they have been since the Clinton administration.

“The predominance of industrial, grainfed beef production in America is why Carl's Jr. has initially sourced its grassfed beef from Australia - but it doesn't have to stay that way,” an AWA spokesperson said on its blog.

Because they are in fact different brands who just happen to be run under the same company. Hardee's was bought out by Carl's Jr. so instead of changing the name to Carl's Jr. they kept everything the same and just came up with a similar yet very different in other ways food menu.

I got this burger confused with the famous star. Superstar is my go to when I frequent Carl's. The Superstar has been around for years and is similar to the FamousStar but has two patties instead of one.
