The history of Caramello can be traced back to the mid-1960s, when Cadbury began experimenting with new chocolate formulations and flavor combinations. In 1968, the company introduced Caramello, which quickly became a popular candy bar in the United States and Australia.

The Cadbury Caramello - or Caramilk as it's known in England - was invented by British chocolatier John Cadbury. Dissatisfied with the lack of gooey centers in the world he left behind, his enraged spirit roused after nearly eight decades of peaceful slumber to push the first Caramello bars into production in 1968.

This heavenly bar is made in Ireland with Cadbury's famously creamy Dairy Milk chocolate, and filled with a sweet and gooey golden caramel centre. Similar to the British Cadbury Caramel bar, however the chocolate is slightly thinner and filled with a sweeter and more buttery tasting caramel.

It is the second largest confectionery brand in the world after Mars. Cadbury is internationally headquartered in Greater London, and operates in more than 50 countries worldwide. It is known for its Dairy Milk chocolate, the Creme Egg and Roses selection box, and many other confectionery products.

The UK, like the rest of the EU, allows up to 5% non-cocoa vegetable fats to be blended with the crumb, along with cocoa butter. The US does not. According to Beckman, this is the main difference between US-made and British-made Cadbury chocolate.

In 1824, John Cadbury, a Quaker, began selling tea, coffee and drinking chocolate in Bull Street in Birmingham, England. From 1831, he moved into the production of a variety of cocoa and drinking chocolates, made in a factory in Bridge Street and sold mainly to the wealthy because of the high cost of production.

In 1988, The Hershey Company acquired the U.S. rights to its chocolate business. Accordingly, although the Cadbury group's chocolate products have been sold in the U.S. since 1988, they are manufactured by Hershey, causing complaints by consumers, who claim the Hershey-made products are inferior to the originals.
