Forage Products. Forage, a horse's natural feed, should be chosen to meet as much of a horse's protein, energy and fiber needs as possible. Forage types (pasture, hay, cubes/pellets, hay extender) can be combined to provide the best program for each individual horses. Each horse should be fed 15-30 lb of forage daily.

If you can, you should just feed your horse forage. Pasture, hay, haylage, chaff, forage cubes. Forage is the most natural source of calories and protein for your horse. And it does the best job of keeping your horse's gut and its bacteria and fungi (the microbiome) functioning as it should.

Horses require six main classes of nutrients to survive; they include water, fats, carbohydrates, protein, vitamins,and minerals. Water is the MOST IMPORTANT nutrient; horses can't live long without it! Always make sure there is an adequate, clean supply of water.

The mixed grass or corn plant/alfalfa cubes are recommended if fed as the sole source of forage to adult maintenance horses. Straight alfalfa cubes will contain more protein and calcium than the normal adult horse needs, but will not harm the horse as long as its kidneys are functioning properly.

Many products are derived from horses, including meat, milk, hide, hair, bone, and pharmaceuticals extracted from the urine of pregnant mares. Humans provide domesticated horses with food, water, and shelter as well as attention from specialists such as veterinarians and farriers.

Hay. Hay is the most common type of forage harvested for horses today and can be classified into two categories: grass and legume. Grass hay is any grass that has been cut and dried. It's a common forage for horses and can make up the horse's entire daily serving of forage.

Forage benefits for humans Other products provided by livestock include wool, leather, biomass fuels and medicinal products. In addition, forage plants produce oxygen for clean air, reduce soil erosion, provide food and shelter for wildlife, as well as provide numerous other benefits including carbon sequestration.

Alfalfa hay is usually highest in nutrients. Alfalfa is useful in the diets of horses with high nutrient requirements like broodmares and growing horses. Alfalfa is very palatable so horses usually waste less. Timothy and orchardgrass hays are usually lower in most nutrients than alfalfa hay.
