WEMO, a subsidiary of Belkin, are a series of products from Belkin that enable users to control home electronics remotely. The product suite includes electrical plugs, motion sensors, light switches, cameras, light bulbs, and a mobile app.

The Wemo Light Switch connects to your Wi-Fi, allowing your device to connect to it through the Wemo App. It can connect seamlessly over Wi-Fi, 3G or 4G. You can easily set the turn ON or OFF times manually or enter your city name and have lights to turn ON at sunrise then OFF at sunset.

The Wemo App allows you to set Rules for your Wemo devices to follow such as turning ON the lights in the evening so you never come home to a dark house again. Using your Wemo Account, you can turn ON your Wemo from anywhere as long as you are connected to the internet.

Sternum recommends that people prevent the Wemo Mini Smart Plug V2 from accessing the internet and communicating with other devices like the iPhone because of the vulnerability, but the safest bet would be to remove the plugs and replace them with something more secure.

• AMAZON ALEXA. When you link your Wemo with Amazon Alexa, controlling the lights is as easy as using your voice.

WeMo devices communicate using the Universal Plug & Play (UPnP) protocol over HTTP on port 49153. uPnP supports device discovery and service advertisement and all sorts of other things, so it should be possible to configure a WeMo without the app.
