An XL cartridge is capable of holding more ink and is, therefore, able to print more before running out. XL ink cartridges cost a little more than their standard sized counterparts but the increased amount of possible prints offsets this cost and makes them a more economical choice in most cases.

The only difference between the 950XL and the 950 is that the 950XL is a high yield cartridge which means it contains more ink than a standard 950. Apart from that, you can use the 950XL to replace the 950 and vice versa. The XL can fit in the same slot as the 950 in your printer.

The XL cartridges contain more ink than the standard cartridges. For 951 specifically, the standard yield cartridges will print up to 700 pages and the 951XL cartridges will print up to 1,500 pages.

The HP 951 is a standard pigment based cyan, magenta, or yellow ink cartridge that prints 700 pages. The HP 951XL is a high yield cartridge which contains more ink than a standard HP 950 and prints 1,500 pages.

If your printer calls for a 950 or 951 cartridge, then the 950XL and 951XL cartridges will fit. The cartridges are the same size the difference is in the volume of ink they contain. The XL cartridges last longer.
