History. Planters Peanut Company was founded in 1906 in Wilkes-Barre, Pennsylvania by Amedeo Obici, and incorporated two years later as the Planters Nut and Chocolate Company. In 1916, a young schoolboy, Antonio Gentile submitted drawings of an anthropomorphic peanut to a design contest.
Peanuts come from Virginia, the Carolinas, Georgia, Oklahoma, Texas; almonds and pistachios from California; cashews from India; and filberts from Turkey. They're stored and processed in three buildings totalling 575,000 square feet, about the size of 10 football fields.
Planters was founded by Italian immigrant Amedeo Obici in Wilkes-Barre, Pennsylvania. He started his career as a bellhop and fruit stand vendor in Scranton, Pennsylvania. Obici later moved to Wilkes-Barre, opened his own fruit stand, and invested in a peanut roaster.
