Bazooka Joe is a comic strip character featured on small comics included in individually wrapped pieces of Bazooka bubble gum. He wears a black eyepatch, lending him a distinctive appearance.

The comic, featuring Joe, a blonde kid with an eye patch, and his gang, debuted in 1953. In the crowded chewing gum market of the 1950s, Topps used the comic to distinguish Bazooka from other brands. The jokes produced more groaning than laughter, and included a fortune.

About Bazooka Bazooka Candy Brands was originally founded as Topps Chewing Gum, and in its early years produced a popular penny 'Topps Gum' from a factory in Brooklyn, N.Y. After World War II, the company developed Bazooka Bubble Gum.

Bazooka was introduced by the Topps company just after the war in 1947. The first Bazooka gum came in a roll – like a Tootsie Roll. It contained six pieces of gum in a white, blue and red wrapper that sold for a nickel. It also came with a small comic strip.

All of the company's Bazooka products – regular and sugar-free gum, and Gum Pops – are produced in Tunisia. The standard Ring Pop products are made in Scranton, Pa., but variations on the Ring Pop (such as different shapes for seasonal offerings) are made in Thailand and China.

During World War II, "bazooka" became the universally applied nickname of the new American anti-tank weapon, due to its vague resemblance to the musical instrument invented and popularized by 1930s American comedian Bob Burns.
