Sometime between 1952 and 1954, Woody Gelman and Ben Solomon, heads of Product Development at Topps, approached cartoonist Wesley Morse to create Bazooka Joe and his Gang. The character was named after a contest was held asking for suggestions.

All of the company's Bazooka products – regular and sugar-free gum, and Gum Pops – are produced in Tunisia. The standard Ring Pop products are made in Scranton, Pa., but variations on the Ring Pop (such as different shapes for seasonal offerings) are made in Thailand and China.
