The iPhone 5s is Apple's 7th generation iPhone. The iPhone 5s is purposefully imagined, featuring a 4-inch Retina display, an A7 chip with 64-bit desktop-class architecture, the Touch ID fingerprint sensor, an 8MP iSight camera, a FaceTime HD camera, LTE and Wi-Fi,1 iOS, and iCloud.

Apple gave us a fingerprint sensor, an improved camera, and a faster processor. Faster is better, especially when battery life doesn't suffer, but the 5S doesn't feel like a shocking new product. Apple does this every other year with iPhones -- see the iPhone 3GS and iPhone 4S.

Cons: Aluminum back panel can be subject to scratches and dents and the upper and bottom back portions are glass that can be cracked fairly easily. Camera lacks optical zoom. Performance improvement often is not detectable in day-to-day use over the iPhone 5, particularly for non-gamers.

The iPhone 5S was discontinued on March 21, 2016. It will be supported until March 21, 2021. (Unless you bought it in California or Turkey, in which case you have until 2023.)

Do not attempt to charge a wet iPhone; refer to the user guide for cleaning and drying instructions. Liquid damage not covered under warranty. the iPhone 5 is not water proof, it's not even water resistant. The iPhone 5s is NOT waterproof.

The iPhone 5s and iPhone 6 both run iOS 12, for which Apple issued a security update in January 2023. This update was issued for those few devices that don't support iOS 15. We don't expect that Apple will continue support for iOS 12 for much longer. These phones are considered vintage by Apple.

In January 2023 Apple also issued a security update for iOS 12, which addressed serious security flaws in the iPhones 6 and 5s as well as some iPads that can't run iPadOS. However, we do not expect Apple to issue further updates to iOS 12. If you are still using an iPhone 5s or iPhone 6 it really is time to upgrade.
