Sprite is ringing in the holiday season with a new holiday commercial celebrating Black families – both kith and kin. Directed by comedian Eric André, the 'Sprite Holiday Special' is a modern take on the old school holiday special with skits starring Black actors and improv artists.

In the 1840s, marketers began to see Christmas as a prime opportunity to sell goods. Depictions of Santa were associated with advertisements in big cities like New York City and Boston, and the first in-store Santa appeared at Macy's in 1862. The commercial ties of the holiday only grew from there.

Although each advert is very different from the next, the overarching theme of Coca-Cola's advertising strategy is happiness. Since the 19th Century, Coca-Cola has been selling its drinks by selling happiness in a bottle, and this doesn't look set to change anytime soon.
