LEGEND HAS IT A lone ship, carrying barrels of spiced rum across the Caribbean, was viciously attacked by the massive tentacles and colossal strength of an unknown beast. All aboard the doomed vessel were dragged into the watery depths, never to be seen again. We now know this dreaded beast to be The Kraken.

Trinidad The Kraken is a dark spiced rum based on rums distilled from molasses at the Angostura Distillery (in Trinidad) that have been aged between one and two years. This is then blended with spices, including cinnamon, ginger and cloves and sweetened.

Nose: Spicy and rich with notes of vanilla and toffee apples. Hints of lime and cinnamon too. Palate: Dark, rich palate. Thick with molasses and tar, and a barrage of cinnamon, golden syrup, nutmeg and charred oak.

The rum is strong, rich, black and smooth just like the mythical beast. It is 40% abv which is higher than most Spiced rums. The packaging of the rum is very good. An old fashioned pirate style flagon/bottle and a nice box as well (though its presentation is a little out of step with the bottle).

Originating in Scandinavian folklore, the kraken is usually depicted as an aggressive cephalopod-like creature capable of destroying entire ships and dragging sailors to their doom.

It's believed that the earliest legends of the kraken, and similar creatures from other parts of the world, were inspired by sightings of real animals - particularly the giant squid and giant octopus - occasionally glimpsed by oceanic explorers.
