First produced in 1984, the cereal aims to provide the taste of cinnamon toast in a crunch cereal format. The cereal consists of small squares or rectangles of wheat and rice covered with cinnamon and sugar.

The cereal was originally invented by scientist John Mendesh and by General Mills assistant product manager Elisabeth Trach after receiving the idea from an unnamed child in a "give us your best idea for a cereal" radio contest held by General Mills. The child received a set of hot wheels toys as a Grand Prize.

Chef Wendell is the mascot for Cinnamon Toast Crunch. He used to make the cereal with two other chefs, Quello and Bob. Chef Wendell was eventually replaced by the Crazy Squares (Now the Cinnamojis).

Cinnamoroll (Japanese: シナモロール, Hepburn: Shinamorōru) is a character series created by Sanrio in 2001, with character designs from Miyuki Okumura. The main character, Cinnamoroll, is a white puppy with chubby cheeks and long ears, blue eyes, pink cheeks, and a tail that resembles a cinnamon roll.
