Claimants allege that Gardasil causes side effects as severe as cancer and that Merck misrepresented its safety and efficacy. Gardasil is designed to prevent infections with certain strains of HPV, which can cause cervical cancer, pre-cancerous cells and genital warts, according to the CDC.

Dosage and Schedule HPV vaccination is administered as: A two-dose series (0, 6-12 months) for most persons who initiate vaccination at ages 9 through 14 years. A three-dose series (0, 1-2, 6 months) for persons who initiate vaccination at ages 15 through 45 years, and for immunocompromised persons.

HPV vaccine is recommended for routine vaccination at age 11 or 12 years. (Vaccination can be started at age 9.) ACIP also recommends vaccination for everyone through age 26 years if not adequately vaccinated when younger.

The vaccine will prevent up to 90 per cent of cervical cancer cases. It will also protect you against the types of HPV that cause over 90 per cent of genital wart infections. It won't protect you against any other sexually transmitted infections. It also won't stop girls getting pregnant.

People whose immune responses might be lower, for example due to HIV infection, cancer, transplantation, autoimmune disease, or taking immunosuppressant medications, should receive three doses to make sure they get the most benefit.

Fainting can happen after getting an HPV vaccine. Sometimes people who faint can fall and hurt themselves. For this reason, your child's doctor may ask your child to sit or lie down for 15 minutes after he or she gets GARDASIL 9. Some people who faint might shake or become stiff, which may need treatment.

Anyone up until age 25 is eligible to receive the vaccine for free on the NHS. The HPV vaccine (Gardasil 9) protects against the HPV types 6, 11, 16, 18, 31, 33, 45, 52 and 58.
