Black Music Honors is an annual two-hour event that acknowledges the legendary African-American artists who have influenced and made significant musical contributions to African-American culture and American music worldwide.

This year's show honored the likes of Missy Elliott, SWV, Evelyn “Champagne” King, and Jeffrey Osborne, with performances from Anthony Hamilton, Robin Thicke, Sevyn Streeter, Jacquees, Queen Naija, David Banner, Juvenile, The Shindellas, 702, and others.

The Grammy Awards The Grammy Awards (stylized as GRAMMY), or simply known as the Grammys, are awards presented by the Recording Academy of the United States to recognize "outstanding" achievements in the music industry. The Headies Awards ceremony chronicled the meteorite rise of African music. The Headies Award has celebrated top African music acts who have had an incredible year, with entertainers such as Diamond Platinumz (Tanzania), Rema (Nigeria), Libianca (Cameroon), and Focalistic (South Africa) as some of the winners.

African-American music is an umbrella term covering a diverse range of music and musical genres largely developed by African Americans and their culture. Its origins are in musical forms that developed as a result of the enslavement of African Americans prior to the American Civil War.

In contrast “Ella Fitzgerald Sings the Duke Ellington Song Book” won for jazz performance. That year, Count Basie became the first Black man to win a Grammy, also taking home two awards, for best jazz group performance and best performance by a dance band.

Sam Cooke Few Black artists of the 1950s would prove as popular as Cooke, who used his success to fight for equality and the ability for African-American artists to perform in front of integrated audiences and gain control of their music in the recording industry.

African-American slaves created a distinctive type of music that played an important role in the era of enslavement. Slave songs, commonly known as work songs, were used to combat the hardships of the physical labor. Work songs were also used to communicate with other slaves without the slave owner hearing.

Atlanta, GA May 19th was a night of unparalleled glamor and style at the 8th Annual Black Music Honors television taping, held at The Cobb Energy Performing Arts Centre in Atlanta, GA.

Kevin Lemons and Higher Ground, Tina Campbell, The Williams Brothers and Beverly Crawford each delivered their anointing in homage to the Hawkins Family, whose award was accepted by Tramaine Hawkins and Lynette Hawkins Stephens.
