Monistat has been studied in clinical trials. Researchers found that the one-day treatment of a vaginal miconazole ovule was safe and effective.

The most common side effects of Monistat are itching, burning, and irritation in the vaginal area. Stomach cramping is also possible. These side effects are usually mild.

Regular strength MONISTAT® 3 and low dose MONISTAT® 7 offer treatment with less concentrated doses, but are just as effective at curing yeast infections.

Official answer. Most women use Monistat (miconazole) right before bedtime, and then lay down for the rest of the night while sleeping. For best results, lie down as soon as possible after inserting the product. This can help prevent significant leakage.

Do not use tampons, douches, spermicides or other vaginal products while using this medication. Unscented sanitary napkins may be used for your menstrual period or to protect your clothing from leakage of the medication. Tell your doctor if your condition does not improve after 3 days or lasts more than 7 days.

Use the medication usually once daily at bedtime for 1 to 7 nights depending on the product used, or as directed by your doctor. If you are using the single dose tablet, it may be used during the daytime or at bedtime.

If you have fever, chills, flu-like symptoms, stomach/abdominal pain, or a bad-smelling vaginal discharge, do not use this medication. Contact your doctor right away because these may be signs of a more serious infection.

The MONISTAT® 1 Ovule® stays in place and can be used day or night, making it a great solution for women who don't want to wait until bedtime to begin treating their yeast infection, or for those who exercise frequently or engage in high levels of activity.

Although mild vaginal itching, burning and irritation are listed as side effects of Monistat, some women have reported more intense effects. If you experience severe vaginal itching, burning, irritation or swelling after applying Monistat, you should stop using it and check with your doctor.
