The first Lindt GOLD BUNNY saw the light of day in 1952. The story goes that one spring morning, a Master Chocolatier was watching a small bunny in his garden. His young daughter was completely mesmerized when she saw the little bunny but began to cry as soon as it disappeared into the bushes.

It all began with a Little Girl and a Bunny... For days, she was heartbroken. Her father thought long and hard how he could cheer her up before alighting on the perfect idea. He decided to craft a bunny so she could always find her little friend: the Lindt GOLD BUNNY was born.

The chocolate egg started as a pagan symbol of fertility and spring and developed into a representation of Christ's resurrection. To this day, it still holds this meaning for a variety of people from different backgrounds across the country.

Estimates suggest that between 80 and 90 million chocolate eggs are eaten annually in Britain. Predictions indicate consumers are likely to spend £415 million on Easter eggs in 2023. 76% of people in the UK associate Easter with chocolate eggs. An average UK child receives 8.8 eggs each.

They are made by Lindt & Sprüngli, one of the oldest and most famous chocolate makers in Switzerland. Except they are made by Lindt & Sprüngli in Germany. I discovered this thanks to a friend from Helvetic LA, who bought a Lindt bunny in Los Angeles, only to find it was made in Germany.

While history does not know exactly who to credit for creating the first chocolate bunny, a Pennsylvania drugstore owner named Robert L. Strohecker was dubbed “Father of the Chocolate Easter Bunny” after crafting a five-foot-tall chocolate bunny in his shop to advertise for Easter.

In 1873 J.S. Fry & Sons produced the first hollow chocolate egg, using egg moulds. Manufacturing their first Easter egg in 1875, Cadbury created the modern chocolate Easter egg after developing a pure cocoa butter that could be moulded into smooth shapes.

Many chocolate producers favour thinner chocolate at Easter - and thinner chocolate melts more quickly, releasing more aroma molecules.

The tradition of eating and gifting chocolate at Easter dates back centuries ago when Christian Europeans began exchanging eggs as symbols of rebirth during Lent season.
