Ceramics are generally fine to use in the oven. However, do not use plates decorated with adhesive designs. Equally, if the ceramics are glazed, make sure they are manufactured to use in a built in oven . Oven-safe glass is fine to use in the oven.

As you can see in the photo, the slower transfer of heat to the batter means cakes baked in glass (or ceramic) will take longer to cook than those in metal (5 to 8 minutes longer, according to a test with yellow cake done by Cook's Illustrated).

Ceramic plates not only look beautiful, but they're sturdy and withstand the oven heat pretty well. In addition, their composition is usually clay which is dried in heat during its formation so heating a ceramic plate isn't an issue at all.

Cooking on unseasoned cast iron can result in sticking, rusting, and a myriad of other issues (some of which are outlined above). Lucky for cast-iron newbies, most skillets sold these days come pre-seasoned. Take your store-bought seasoning a step further though and add your own before you call it good to go.
