David Beckham 'proud' to have been ambassador for Qatar 2022 World Cup. Former England captain David Beckham says he was "proud" to have been a Qatar 2022 World Cup ambassador.

The controversy surrounding Qatar's hosting of the World Cup, arising in relation to the country's alleged violations of human rights, and specifically migrant worker rights, persisted from 2010 until the conclusion of the tournament in 2022.

This year's World Cup in Qatar has been “the best ever”, Gianni Infantino, president of FIFA, football's global governing body, has said. This was down to the “unique, cohesive power that this World Cup has shown”, Infantino said on Friday in Doha, after a FIFA council meeting.

The 47-year-old Beckham is believed to receive $150m for his overall ambassadorial role in Qatar, with $10m for his work around the World Cup.

Some media outlets, sporting experts, and human rights groups have criticised Qatar's record of human rights violations; Qatar's limited football history; the high expected cost; the local climate; and alleged bribery in the bidding process. Not all nations competing have put focus on concerns.

FIFA and Qatar have both been criticized for corruption, human rights abuses and for holding an outdoor sporting event in a nation with a notoriously hot and humid climate.
