The game includes over 1,000 Guess words on 260 cards -- 130 cards for adults, and 130 cards designed with younger kids in mind. The team with the most points wins the family game of unspeakable fun!

As you play you should try to give creative clues, listen for your opponents to say the taboo words, and pass sometimes when a card stumps you. Each card you get right is a point for your team, and all of the cards your skip, or cards on which you said words that were taboo are a point for the other team.

Players can also play using the Game-changer die to mix things up. If it lands on One Guesser, only one teammate can guess on their turn. With 4 other possibilities on the die, players better be shrewd, quick-thinking, and willing to take some risks - but don't get shut down by the squeaker!

The origin of the Taboo game is unknown, but it has been published in 1989 by a company called Parker Brothers. Hasbro has purchased it since then and it has become one of the most popular party games ever.

The English term taboo comes from tapu in Oceanic languages, particularly Polynesian languages, with such meanings as "prohibited" or "forbidden". That root tapu is reflected, among others, by Tongan or Māori tapu, and by Hawaiian kapu.
