Both Halo Infinite and Gears 5 have changed the direction of their respective series by implementing an open world in their games. But, while both Gears and Halo have this new element, they operate differently in both games and both aren't true open-world games they still make good use of the mechanic.

On January 27, 2014 Microsoft announced that they have acquired all rights to the franchise from Epic Games and that Rod Fergusson had rejoined Microsoft Studios to lead development on future Gears of War games.

Cliff Bleszinkski, lead designer on the first three Gears of War games, said he believes the eventual sale of the series to Microsoft came as a result of developer Epic Games "not knowing what to do with the future of the franchise."
