In the Mexican town of San Angel, Manolo (Diego Luna), Maria (Zoë Saldana) and Joaquin (Channing Tatum) have been friends ever since childhood. From start to finish, The Book of Life emphasizes having a good, pure heart. Manolo is told, “May your heart always be pure and courageous.” The movie ends with La Muerta saying, “Love, true love, the really, really good kind of love, never dies.”

More importantly, the film was a culmination of over a decade of planning by writer/director Jorge Gutierrez who already had definite ideas about how he wanted the story to be represented visually. A large part of The Book of Life's success was due to its unique visual style.

In the New Testament, and some verses in the Old Testament, we run into something known as the “Book of Life” a number times. In essence, the Book of Life serves as a testament to those saved who will enjoy eternity with the Lord.

Coco may be a better film, at least to me, but that doesn't mean The Book of Life isn't a great film too. Both are highly rated, and I loved both. Remember that just because both films focus on the same holiday doesn't mean you have to choose one over the other. I encourage you to see them both.
