Japan The 2024 Mazda CX-90 will replace the automaker's CX-9 model when it goes on sale in spring 2023. Built in Japan, the new 2024 CX-90 is a midsize, three-row, eight-passenger SUV designed to convey a premium look and feel and engineered to have the driving satisfaction Mazdas are known for.

The Mazda CX-9 is a mid-size crossover SUV manufactured since April 2006 by Mazda in Japan, at its Ujina #1 plant in Hiroshima Prefecture. It is Mazda's largest passenger vehicle, and serves as one of the brand's SUV with three-row seating. As of 2023, the CX-9 is positioned above the CX-8 in Mazda's global line-up.

Mazda makes most of its vehicles at one of three plants in Japan, two in Hiroshima and one in Yamaguchi. With that said, Mazda does have one plant that makes Mazda3 sedans in Salamanca, Mexico for the North American market, and is currently constructing another plant in Huntsville, Alabama.

Mazda is retiring the CX-9, the long-standing third-row contender, and replacing it with the brand-new CX-90. This isn't the first time in recent history that Mazda has upgraded and revamped its SUV lineup, with the CX-5 getting replaced by the CX-50 in 2023.

The CX-5 snagged a tricky 2023 IIHS Top Safety Pick last year for its strong crashworthiness, headlights, and front crash prevention performances. Mazda's compact also earns a five-star overall safety rating from the NHTSA. The Japanese automaker is generous with safety features, too.

Less expensive: The reason to compare the CX-9 to luxury cars in the first place is the price. Fully equipped, a top-of-the-line CX-9 Signature offers luxuries like heated and ventilated seats (even heated in the second row) and supple Nappa leather seating - and that loaded CX-9 costs less than the entry-level XC90.

With the choice of six or seven seats and petrol or diesel power, the CX-9 is a flexible family hauler perfectly suited to busy and varied lifestyles. Classic design, the choice of all-wheel-drive or front-wheel drive, and a spacious cabin round out this appealing all-rounder.

The Mazda CX-9 and Mazda CX-90 are similarly sized, but the Mazda CX-90 is slightly larger. The Mazda CX-90 is 201.6 inches in length vs. 199.4 inches for the Mazda CX-9. Inside, it's a similar story, with the Mazda CX-90 providing more passenger space and cargo volume.

The 2022 model of the MAZDA CX-9 is especially impressive. For starters, this model year hasn't experienced any recalls (as of now). It also received a perfect reliability score of five stars from Consumer Reports; both the 2020 and 2021 models received the same five-star ratings.

In general, the Mazda CX-9 is worth buying even in 2023. It's reliable for the most part especially if you avoid the 2021 model year with the oil consumption issues.

Mazda manufactures both piston and Wankel “rotary” engines. The company's Mexican subsidiary is responsible for producing the gasoline and diesel engines used in Mazda vehicles. Over the years, Japanese automakers have engineered a wide range of engines, including four-cylinder units and robust V6 mills.
