OXYTROL® is a transdermal patch that is a treatment for overactive bladder. It delivers the active ingredient, oxybutynin, through your skin and into your bloodstream. Overactive bladder makes it hard to control when you urinate (pass water).

Oxybutynin starts to work after about 3 to 4 hours to relax the muscle surrounding your bladder. However it may take up to 4 weeks before it works fully.

Oxybutynin is used to treat symptoms of an overactive bladder, such as incontinence (loss of bladder control) or a frequent need to urinate. Oxybutynin belongs to the group of medicines called antispasmodics. It helps decrease muscle spasms of the bladder and the frequent urge to urinate caused by these spasms.

Oxybutynin transdermal patches are used to treat an overactive bladder (a condition in which the bladder muscles contract uncontrollably and cause frequent urination, urgent need to urinate, and inability to control urination). Oxybutynin is in a class of medications called antimuscarinics.

You should not use Oxytrol if you have uncontrolled narrow-angle glaucoma, a blockage in your stomach or intestines, or if you are unable to completely empty your bladder.

OXYTROL (oxybutynin transdermal system) is designed to deliver oxybutynin over a 3-to 4day interval after application to intact skin. OXYTROL is available as a 39 cm2 system containing 36 mg of oxybutynin.

Anticholinergics. These medications can calm an overactive bladder and may be helpful for urge incontinence. Examples include oxybutynin (Ditropan XL), tolterodine (Detrol), darifenacin (Enablex), fesoterodine (Toviaz), solifenacin (Vesicare) and trospium chloride.

Reportedly, due to disappointing sales results, distribution of the OTC version of OXY-TDS was discontinued by Bayer AG in early 2015 following their acquisition of Merck & Co [Wilkes, 2015].

Skin redness/itching/irritation at the application site, dry mouth, drowsiness, dizziness, blurred vision, headache, weakness, nausea or constipation may occur. If any of these effects last or get worse, tell your doctor or pharmacist promptly.

Transdermal oxybutynin, marketed as Oxytrol for Women when it was switched to an OTC drug, is no longer available. OTC Oxytrol for Women was removed from the market because it was not a commercial success.

The Oxytrol® for Men skin patch is available only with a doctor's prescription, but the Oxytrol® for Women skin patch is available without a prescription or over-the counter (OTC).
