Every pizza at Domino's begins with a layer of a Domino's signature sauce on top of one of our delicious crusts. This tomato sauce has a backbone of garlic and other spices for a distinct flavor. However, if you prefer a more subtle and sweeter taste, you can opt for the Hearty Marinara sauce.

Domino's Cheesy Marinara Dip includes layers of flavorful marinara dipping sauce oven-baked with creamy, melted cheeses. It is served with your choice of Handmade Parmesan or Garlic bread twists.

Marinara sauce is typically a simple sauce blended from tomatoes and aromatic ingredients such as onions and garlic. Additional seasonings and herbs such as basil, oregano, red pepper flakes, and more can be added depending on personal preference.

Pizza Marinara took its name from the seafarers who ate this particular pizza prepared by their wives when they returned home from their fishing expeditions in the Bay of Naples. The seafarer's wife, la marinara, traditionally topped the pizza with tomato, oregano, garlic, and extra virgin olive oil.

The “hearty marinara” generally used on the pasta is a chunky, less spicy sauce where the “robust inspired tomato sauce” is what they generally put on the pizzas and is very smooth with no chunks and is zesty and I feel spicier. I personally get the hearty marinara on my pizzas.

Pizza marinara has no cheese: just tomato sauce, thinly sliced garlic, and oregano. It's similar to pizza margherita, but without the cheese. Some sources state pizza marinara originated as early as the mid 1700's in Naples.

At Domino's, we offer it in a dipping cup on the side or added to your pizza. That's right, pump up your pizza order and go for the hearty marinara sauce. This would be a great addition to the traditional pepperoni pizza. We also recommend trying the sauce with the MeatZZa Feast® pizza and the Pacific Veggie pizza.

While the two sauces share many ingredients, the main difference is in the consistency and depth of flavor. Marinara is brighter, thinner, and more tomato forward than tomato sauce. Tomato sauce is thicker, creamier, and bears some similarity with gravy, hence why some Italians call it “Sunday gravy”.

Marinara can be used as a spaghetti sauce or with any other type of pasta, as well as be used as a dipping sauce. Spaghetti sauce uses all those same base ingredients and then takes it to the next level, adding proteins and/or vegetables.

“Marinara” translates to “seafaring” - or colloquially to “sailor style” or “mariner style.” It was given the name marinara not because it was once a seafood-style sauce, but because it was the preferred meal of Italy's merchants during long expeditions at sea.
