astronaut Buzz Aldrin Buzz Lightyear's was named in honor of Apollo 11 astronaut Buzz Aldrin, the second person to walk on the Moon. According to Pixar producers, the character was provisionally named Lunar Larry, but it sounded "too wacky". Aldrin acknowledged the tribute when he pulled a Buzz Lightyear toy out during a speech at NASA.

Buzz's most well-known catchphrase has always been, "To infinity and beyond!" It's a phrase the action figure says on his own multiple times throughout the Toy Story franchise, and sometimes shares with his best friend Woody.

Prices on the original Buzz Lightyear action figures have gone to infinity and beyond (I'm sorry). Based on recent eBay sales, people are willing to pay $150-$200 for a talking Buzz Lightyear figure from 1995.

Though many of the gang were made up for the movie (like our 2 main friends, Woody and Buzz), a lot of Andy's toys are replicas or inspired by toys that exist or once existed in real life. Toy Story is based in its present time, 1995, so many of Andy's toys pre-date the movie.

And even though Buzz Lightyear was a newer toy featured in the Toy Story movies, he wasn't a real toy either. His voice technology was far more advanced than Woody's pull-string, placing him easily in the 1990's era of battery-operated action figures, but that's as deep as his fictional roots go.

Buzz refuses to believe otherwise because he believes that he is a Space Ranger. It was the commercial that proves to him that he is a toy because he sees other copies of himself.
