Although Häagen-Dazs is a "playful made-up name," co-founder Reuben has also cheekily said it means, "The finest ice cream that money can buy," per Häagen-Dazs. One of the things that makes Häagen-Dazs so creamy and delicious is a higher percentage of butterfat, according to Tori Avey.

It all began in 1960 with two Polish immigrants from the Bronx. 60 years ago, two Polish immigrants from the Bronx decided to create a new luxury in ice cream. They invented a recipe, dreamed up a name and made it happen.

Today, the Häagen-Dazs brand is owned by General Mills. General Mills produces the ice cream sold in Europe in a factory built by the Mattuses in 1992 - not in Scandanavia, but in France. However, in the states, the product is licensed to Nestlé and produced by that company's Dreyer's brand.
