CLARITIN Tablets contain 10 mg micronized loratadine, an antihistamine, to be administered orally. It also contains the following inactive ingredients: corn starch, lactose, and magnesium stearate. CLARITIN Syrup contains 1 mg/mL micronized loratadine, an antihistamine, to be administered orally.

Common side effects The most common side effect of loratadine is feeling sleepy. This happens in more than 1 in 100 people. Side effects in children may include: headaches.

Loratadine is used to temporarily relieve the symptoms of hay fever (allergy to pollen, dust, or other substances in the air) and other allergies. These symptoms include sneezing, runny nose, and itchy eyes, nose, or throat. Loratadine is also used to treat itching and redness caused by hives.

Loratadine is a second generation oral histamine H1-receptor antagonist [7]. Previous studies have demonstrated its efficacy for the relief of SAR symptoms over placebo [8, 9]. However, the onset of action for loratadine has been variably reported, ranging from 75 to 180 min [10–15].

In addition, do not take loratadine (Claritin) while taking erythromycin (an antibiotic), ketoconazole (an antifungal drug), cimetidine (a heartburn medicine), or clarithromycin (an antibiotic) due to potential drug interactions and an increased risk of side effects.

Claritin side effects are typically mild and can be managed at home. If they become too bothersome, stop taking Claritin and talk to your healthcare provider.

Patients should not take loratadine with other CNS depressants such as diphenhydramine, dextromethorphan, or pseudoephedrine as it may cause dose-related sedation.

Loratadine (Claritin) typically causes less side effects like sleepiness than some other antihistamines, such as diphenhydramine (Benadryl) and possibly cetirizine (Zyrtec).

What time of day should I take Claritin®? Claritin® products are non-drowsy and can be taken at any time. Do not take more than one dose every 12 hours if you are using a 12-hour product, or one dose every 24 hours if you are using a 24-hour product. Always follow the label directions.
