In 1950 COIT Cleaners was founded in San Francisco at the base of the landmark COIT Tower. What started as a neighborhood institution and grew into the world's most experienced specialized cleaning and restoration company.

The simple fluted tower is named for Lillie Hitchcock Coit, a wealthy eccentric and patron of the city's firefighters.

Apart from the sculpture, which specifically depicts firefighters, Coit Tower is also sometimes referred to as the “Coit Memorial Tower.” The reason is that the tower was dedicated in honor of the volunteer firemen who lost their lives during the 5 great fires in San Francisco.

The tower, in the city's Pioneer Park, was built between 1932 and 1933 using Lillie Hitchcock Coit's bequest to beautify the city of San Francisco. It was added to the National Register of Historic Places on January 29, 2008.

Coit Tower was built solely as monument to the leg- acy of Lillie Hitchcock Coit who left a $125,000 be- quest to San Francisco to be spent “for the purpose of adding beauty to the city which I have always loved”.

On October 8th, 1933, Coit Tower was completed. Designed by Arthur Brown, Jr., the 210-foot tower offers a 360-degree view of the beautiful city of San Francisco on a clear day and lets you know what it would look like to live inside a cloud on a foggy one.
