Arrows can be shot without fletchings, but this should only be done for tuning and form improvements.

An offset fletch (right or left) creates arrow spin. This rotation better stabilizes the arrow and keeps it on a true flight path as it travels downrange. The arrow will be less effected by the wind and will steer shafts tipped with a sure-to-cut fixed-blade broadhead.

Fletching on an arrow shaft stabilizes the shaft during flight by causing it to spin as it leaves the bow, just as a quarterback puts a spiral spin on the football as he passes. Spinning keeps the arrow on its flight path and preserves speed, accuracy, and, ultimately, impact power.

Sizes

Three standard 3" vanes are about 19 grains, and three of those fancy high-profile vanes weigh in at roughly 18 grains. As we mentioned earlier, feathers are notably lighter (about 9 grains for three 4" feathers and 6 grains for three 3" feathers).

Helical. While there are different degrees of helical, this fletch position is ideal for those looking for maximum arrow accuracy. Much like a bullet coming out of a gun, rotation acts like a gyroscope to quickly and efficiently stabilize the arrow and create maximum spin.

As a basic rule, if you have long, thin arrows - you would need a bigger vane to help stabilise the arrows flight. If you shoot short, thin arrows - then a very small thin vane would work best. If you're shooting long distances, you might want to pick a smaller sized vane to help speed up your shot.

So all other things being equal, vanes don't stabilize arrow flight quite as well as feathers. But don't make too big of a deal out of the vane's limitations. For the vast majority of applications, they're more than sufficient.

Helical fletchings offer maximum stability allowing for greater accuracy due to the arrow coming under control faster, the downside to this is that the arrow does loose speed and it can cause contact issues. Whether you are choosing plastic, feathers or spin vanes what the size of the fletching does is the same.
