Personally, I like to leave the mask in my hair for longer than suggested (though Function of Beauty notes you shouldn't leave it in overnight), so I don't put it on while I'm in the shower - that would take way too long. Instead, I dampen my hair, run the hair mask from the roots down, and concentrate on the ends.

I used the custom formula for two months and didn't notice and major difference in my hair - it did smell pretty good though. After shampooing, apply to towel-dried hair and massage through to ends. Leave on for 5-10 minutes. Rinse thoroughly. For more intense results, leave on for up to 15 minutes.

Shampooing causes the hair follicles to open up, so slathering the mask immediately after your wash will really help the conditioning ingredients to penetrate. Leave it on for three to 20 minutes and rinse it off. Limit masking to once a week. Use hair mask before shampooing.

While hair masks could help your hair in so many incredible ways, it's best to restrain yourself from using them every single day. The intense hydration lasts longer than you think, and over-conditioning, when your hair doesn't need it, could lead to hair build-up, excess oil, and heavy, weighed-down hair.

Rinse With Lukewarm Water Unless your packaging states otherwise, you'll want to rinse out the hair mask with lukewarm water after the allotted amount of time, just as you would with conditioner.

Once you're done, rinse the mask out. You should always shampoo before masking but then condition your hair after applying a hair mask. The shampoo will open up your hair cuticles, allowing your strands to receive more goodness from the mask.

A hair mask should be used before conditioner. Why? Well, a hair mask provides a concentrated dose of nourishment and repair, while a conditioner offers regular hydration and manageability. By using the hair mask first, you give your locks that extra TLC they crave before sealing in the goodness with a conditioner.

Those with very dry and damaged hair could benefit from using a hydrating hair mask two or three times a week, while those with greasy hair may want to stick to the recommended once a week. If you've got very straight hair, then you should also avoid using a hair mask more than twice a week.
