Stains need between 12-48 hours to fully dry. If water comes into contact with your newly stained deck before it's dry, the water will soak into the pores of the decking material and displace the stain.

If you want to cover up the natural look of the wood, then paint is obviously the right option for you. But if you want to preserve the grain and knots of the wood, a wood stain will be the best choice.

Mid-Sheen/Eggshell and Silk finishes work well in high traffic areas as they are washable and extremely durable. A High Gloss finish is the most durable, long lasting, stain resistant, water resistant and washable but should be used on smooth surfaces to avoid showing imperfections.
