Published on August 11, 2003. Kraft Foods this month launches Nabisco Ritz Chips, a line of low-fat crispy cracker-chips that are "oven-toasted," so, fittingly, the campaign will feature permanently tan actor George Hamilton.

History. In the early 1900s, the Jackson Cracker company of Jackson, Michigan, developed a small, round cracker called the Jaxon. The company was bought out by Nabisco in 1919. Nabisco introduced the Ritz Cracker in 1934.

Century when they were usually made with saltines. Or water crackers. Although mock apple pie was created during a time when fresh fruit could be expensive.

Lucky for vegans, all but one of the Ritz Cracker Originals flavors are vegan-friendly. Several varieties of the Crisp & Thins and the Toasted Chips would make upscale snacks on any vegan cheese tray.

New flavor will retail for $3.95. Just in time for March Madness, RITZ Crackers, an official sponsor of the 2023 NCAA March Madness tournament, is debuting a new flavor joining the current line-up of Toasted Chips flavors: RITZ Everything Toasted Chips.

American crackers, themselves, first came into existence in Newburyport, Mass. - or so the story goes– in the bakery of Theodore Pearson. There he created pilot biscuits. Sailors, soldiers, explorers and travelers have carried some variation of cracker with them for centuries, as far back as you can imagine.

The humble crackers really were perceived as fancy at the time, showing up on the menu at New York's swanky Waldorf-Astoria hotel. Americans with tight wallets during the Great Depression viewed Ritz as an affordable way to get a little taste of a wealthy lifestyle.

How are crackers made? Crackers are made with wheat flour, water, yeast or chemical leaveners, and inclusions of fat, sugar and other enriching ingredients. There are two major types: Soda crackers (saltine-type)

All of the Nabisco Ritz Cracker varieties, including the original cracker, indicated the presence of dairy. They are certified as OU-D. Some of the Ritz Crackers, such as the varieties with cheese or butter in their names, are clearly not vegan.

(Ritz Toasted Chips are thin, crisp squares. Neither is much like a regular Ritz cracker.) Because they also contain wheat, the new Ritz Toasted Corn Chips are not gluten-free. Whereas a 1-ounce serving of Fritos (about 32) contains 10 grams of fat, an ounce of the Ritz chips (more like 14) contains 6 grams of fat.
