VARMINT BULLETS The J4 Precision Jacket is thinner at the nose. These jackets are cut to size by a process known as pinch trimming. This pinch trim produces a bullet tip that is very thin and will expand quickly (impact velocity and animal size will effect expansion results).

It is accurate and deadly. For all their accuracy and expansion, Berger Hunting VLDs do not create more meat damage. Berger Hunting VLDs perform effectively at 1,800 feet per second impact velocity or even faster. They will still expand even when the impact is as low as 1,500 fps.

However, Match bullets are designed with a thinner jacket and are typically not bonded to the core. They often fragment on target impact. Thus the match bullet will “come apart”, lose mass and have limited penetration in the gel while the hunting bullet will retain its mass and penetrate further into the gel.

The bullets can still be effective at slower speeds but as they slow down, the resulting wound channels will begin to reduce as well. For shot placement, I prefer to tuck the bullets right behind the shoulder similar to that of an archery shot. Some hunters like the “high shoulder shot” which is also very effective.
