The current owners, Mark and Sara Michaelson, are longtime collectors who bonded over their shared love of old comics. Mark reportedly purchased his copy of Superman #1 from the original owner, who parted with the book in 1979 only on condition that the buyer would treasure it as much as he did.

In an April 2021 Associated Press article, Vincent Zurzolo, COO of ComicConnect.com, an online auction and consignment company, said that it was estimated that about 100 copies of the issue were still in existence.
