A twist in The Incredibles is that the movies are set in a universe where superheroes are decreed illegal after decades of service to the community. This aspect gives Bird several compelling angles to work with, such as Bob Parr's very relatable mid-life crisis in the original.

The Incredibles just feels like a much bigger universe when it comes to superheroes, and that is something that is developed throughout the movie. Straight away the world and history are created, with backstory, older superheroes and hints that the superhero world is much bigger than just the characters shown.

It captures the essence of classic superhero stories, while also introducing concepts that would be touched on in future ones. "With great power, comes great responsibility" is Spider-Man's famous creed, and the characters of "The Incredibles" embody this as well.
