Our VA Mission and Core Values Our mission, as the Department of Veterans Affairs, is to care for those “who shall have borne the battle” and for their families, caregivers and survivors. Our core values focus our minds on our mission of caring and thereby guide our actions toward service to others.

The survey, which asked Veterans about their experience with VA health care since the MISSION Act was implemented, found that more than 80% were satisfied with their VA health care. Nearly 75% of Veteran respondents reported improvements at their local VA, and more than 90% would recommend VA care to fellow Veterans.

Honorable Denis Richard McDonough The Honorable Denis Richard McDonough was nominated by President Biden to lead the Department of Veterans Affairs. Mr. McDonough's nomination was confirmed by the United States Senate on February 8th, 2021, and he was sworn in the following day as the 11th Secretary of Veterans Affairs.

With the words, “To care for him who shall have borne the battle and for his widow, and his orphan,” President Abraham Lincoln affirmed the government's obligation to care for those injured during the war and to provide for the families of those who perished on the battlefield.

Not only do our veterans protect our rights and freedoms, but they also provide services and aid to those in need.

There are many challenges that veterans face after they leave the military.

• Unemployment. Many veterans struggle to find work after they return home.
• Relationship with Themselves. Veterans do a noble thing by serving their country.
• Homelessness.
• Physical Handicaps.
• Poor Mental Health.

In 1865, Abraham Lincoln made a promise to our veterans: “To care for him who shall have borne the battle, and for his widow, and his orphan” by serving and honoring the men and women who are America's Veterans. And so, what would eventually become the United States Veterans Administration was born.

Since then, America has fought in 12 different conflicts, all to protect these same ideals. Our veterans are crucial to life as we know it today because they protect our freedom, provide us with a way to learn about our history and the world around us, and risk their lives for people they have never met.
