September 2019 Rybelsus is a relatively new development by Novo Nordisk, and it was approved for use in the USA in September 2019. It wasn't a few months later until 2020 when the revolutionary drug was approved for use in the UK in adults with type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM).

But Rybelsus also a unique selling point, being the only GLP-1 diabetes medicine sold as an oral therapy, and therefore easier to administer for patients.

Initially approved by the FDA in 2019, Rybelsus® is the first and only GLP-1 analog in pill form and is indicated, along with diet and exercise, to improve glycemic control for adults with type 2 diabetes.

Denmark Initial supply of Rybelsus® will come from manufacturing facilities in Denmark; however, future supply for Rybelsus® will come from manufacturing facilities in the U.S. In 2015, Novo Nordisk made a strategic investment to build a new manufacturing facility in Clayton, NC to prepare for the future demand for Rybelsus®.

Rybelsus has been shown to be effective in aiding reductions in body weight. In a one-year clinical trial, those taking Rybelsus (14 mg dose, which is the higher dose) lost an average of 4.4 kilograms or about 10 pounds, even with metformin treatment for type 2 diabetes already established.

Nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea are most common when first starting RYBELSUS® and when your dose increases. In studies, gastrointestinal side effects were more common in people taking RYBELSUS® than in people taking placebo, and people taking RYBELSUS® were more likely to stop treatment because of these side effects.

Warnings: This medication can cause a certain type of thyroid tumor (thyroid C-cell tumors) in rats. It is unknown if this medication can cause similar tumors in humans. Talk with your doctor about the benefits and risks of treatment with this medication.

Effectiveness. A study has shown that Rybelsus helps lower blood sugar more than a placebo (treatment with no active drug). Researchers used blood tests to measure the level of hemoglobin A1c (HbA1c), which is a marker of blood sugar control.

Rybelsus is a long-term treatment and in most cases, it can be taken for months. As with any other medication, you should speak to your doctor to determine how safe and effective the drug is for you and make decisions accordingly.
