But when it's time for Rob Gronkowski to perform, it's not running routes or catching passes from Tampa Bay Buccaneers quarterback Tom Brady, it's acting in a television commercial for USAA.

While a salute is considered to be a gesture of respect, there's etiquette involved when it comes to rendering a hand salute, whether you are a veteran, active service member, or civilian. As a civilian, saluting soldiers is not a recommended way to honor a current or former member of the military.

WASHINGTON - Veterans and active-duty military not in uniform can now render the military-style hand salute during the playing of the national anthem, thanks to changes in federal law that took effect this month.

The NFL and USAA, an official NFL Salute to Service partner, announced the 2022 nominees for the annual Salute to Service Award presented by USAA.

Most armies in the world follow the same protocol when it comes to a salute. You only salute when you're head is covered. When you go indoors you remove your hat, so you don't salute. Indoors, instead of a salute, you stand at attention, which means the same thing.

A later amendment further authorized hand-salutes during the national anthem by veterans and out-of-uniform military personnel. This was included in the Defense Authorization Act of 2009, which President Bush signed on Oct. 14, 2008.
