Our History From our start in 1946, Paul F. Iams sought out new ways to create premium, quality pet foods that would help give dogs and cats happy, healthy and long lives. He spent time with breeders and nutritionists and learned the importance of protein and the role of fat in pet food diets.

Paul Iams, an animal nutritionist who graduated from The Ohio State University in 1937, founded the Iams Company in 1946 in a small feed mill near Dayton, Ohio. In 1950, he developed the world's first animal-based protein dry dog food and called it Iams 999.

Is IAMS A Good Dog Food? Both Dry and Wet food lines of IAMS are considered high risk dog foods. The wet dog foods have lower levels of carbohydrates and are less processed so they score slightly better but are still rated within the high risk range. IAMS states it doesn't include wheat or soy in its kibble recipes.

Iams has come under PETA's microscope for allegedly mistreating dogs and cats subjected earlier this year to nutritional testing at an Iams contract laboratory in the midwest. The results of a PETA-led, nine-month undercover investigation at the lab found Iams allegedly committed several animal abuses.

Many cats and their guardians love Iams, but it's not a brand we'd recommend. Iams has issued at least six recalls since 2004, suggesting flaws in their quality control and safety program. Iams foods are moderately-priced, but have ingredient lists similar to those found in budget products.
