In the beginning, Sour Patch Kids were shaped as martians, to capitalize on the space enthusiasm of the 70's. They then transformed into children to capitalize on the Cabbage Patch Kids craze of the 1980s. Regardless of their shape, these “sour then sweet” candies, as the saying goes, were a huge success.

However, if you take the unknown processing of the sugar into account, in addition to evidence that parent company Mondelez does use bone char in other products: No, Sour Patch Kids are not vegan. As a matter of ethics, it's up to you to decide what you're most comfortable with.

Sour Candy The sugar in sour candies like Warheads or Sour Patch Kids is harmful enough to your teeth, but the acids in these sweets makes them even more deadly. When you eat sour candy, their high acidic content can damage your tooth enamel faster than other types of candy.

The early production of Sour Patch Kids took place in the late 1970s in Ontario, Canada, created by Frank Galatolie. These deliciously chewy treats were originally named Mars Men to keep up with the space craze during that time. Fittingly, the candies were shaped like martians.

When Mars Men were brought to the United States in 1985, Jaret found that Americans were not as enthralled with aliens and were more obsessed with Cabbage Patch Kids. And so Mars Men became Sour Patch Kids, transforming into little “sour then sweet” children.

They Started Out as Martians. When Canadian candy conglomerate Jaret International created Sour Patch Kids in the late 1970s, they originally intended to capitalize on the popularity of UFOs. The candy was called Mars Men and sold reasonably well.

So why don't vegans eat gelatin? Because it's made from ground up animal skin, bones, tendons and ligaments. Usually, that means pigs or cows, but most kosher gelatin is made from fish parts. To make gelatin, producers cut up animal parts into tiny pieces.

Chris Cooney and Jon Tedd, friends from central New York, created The Vegan Zombie cooking channel on YouTube in 2009. Five years later, they've amassed a following of 41,000+ subscribers.

Since Sour Patch Kids don't contain gelatin, the only vegan-questionable ingredient is sugar, which strict vegans evaluate based on processing. Otherwise, the natural and artificial flavors, colors, and texturizers are all plant-based or were created synthetically in a lab.
