ryant Joe “Joe Willie” Namath (1943- ) was the quarterback of the University of Alabama football team from 1962 until 1964, and for the New York Jets from 1965 until 1976.

Joe Namath is best remembered for his performance in the New York Jets' stunning 16-7 upset of the heavily favored Baltimore Colts in Super Bowl III. However, during his 13-year tenure from 1965 through 1977 he was one of the game's most exciting, proficient and publicized quarterbacks.

In 1977–78 he was a backup quarterback for the Los Angeles Rams, after which he retired. He was inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 1985. Namath remained in the public eye through television commercials and film, television, and theatre appearances.

A Pro Bowler in 1965, Namath led the AFL in passing in 1966. In 1967, Namath became the first quarterback in pro football history to eclipse 4,000 passing yards (he also led the AFL with 28 interceptions that season).

Maynard was the main target for Namath with the New York Jets, though a leg injury made him less effective in the team's stunning upset of the NFL champion Baltimore Colts in the 1969 Super Bowl. Nicknamed "Broadway Joe", Namath became a media celebrity who attracted attention even outside of sports. Namath remains one of the league's most famous and popular figures. He was inducted to the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 1985.
